The largest usage of Natural Gas in Southern California is to heat homes. As we plan to lower our impact on the environment, we should begin by lowering our usage of Natural Gas. To get the most bang for your buck, insulation is the best idea to lower energy usage. By insulating attics, crawl space and door strippings, we can use less energy to heat homes. Windows can be replaced with high quality models than can prevent heat loss, and keep the home cool in the summer, again lowering energy usage. In our Zero Impact Home, we even air-sealed the home to have a tighter envelope and prevent heat loss. This allowed us to lower the size the heating unit from an 85,000 BTU system to a 17,000 BTU system. That is a major reduction in energy use and impact on our environment.
